Fall Car Checklist: 8 Things to Check Before the First Cold Snap

Cold weather finds weak batteries, worn wipers and low tires first. Most of these checks take minutes, and the rest are driveway jobs.

Fall Car Checklist: 8 Things to Check Before the First Cold Snap

The checklist

  1. Battery. Cold makes gasoline and diesel engines need more power to start. Have the battery and charging system tested before the first freeze – most batteries last three to five years. Electric car or hybrid? Expect less range in the cold and plug in overnight so the battery stays warm.
  2. Tire pressure. Pressure drops as it gets colder. Set it to the number on the driver's door sticker, checking when the tires are cold, and check once a month.
  3. Tread. NHTSA's minimum is 2/32 inch. Look for cuts, bulges and cracks on the sidewalls while you are down there. In snowy areas, consider winter tires.
  4. The spare. Check its pressure too – it is easy to forget until you need it.
  5. Wipers and fluid. Replace blades that streak or chatter, and fill the reservoir with winter fluid that has de-icer.
  6. Defrosters. Make sure the front and rear defrosters both work before you need them on an icy morning.
  7. Coolant. Check the level against the marks on the overflow tank (with the engine cold) and have its condition tested. Old coolant protects less against freezing and corrosion.
  8. Lights. Walk around the car: headlights, brake lights, turn signals and hazard lights.

Put a winter kit in the trunk

NHTSA suggests a snow shovel, broom and ice scraper; sand or cat litter for traction; jumper cables, a flashlight and warning flares; a first aid kit; and blankets, water, food, any medicine you need and a phone charger.

Which of these a mobile mechanic can do

All of the mechanical ones: battery testing and replacement, coolant service, wiper and bulb replacement and a general inspection are everyday mobile jobs, done where the car is parked. Among mechanics we list who publish prices, a battery replacement typically runs $125 to $250; some quote installation only, so ask whether the battery is included.
