Electric Car Problems, Recalls and Mobile Repair
What owners of 12 electric models report to NHTSA – 17,982 complaints and 175 recalls – and which EV repairs a mobile mechanic can do where the car sits, versus what goes to the service center.
NHTSA data pulled September 2026.
EVs carry several hundred volts in the main battery and the orange cables. No one should open or repair the high-voltage system outside a trained service center. Everything else on an EV is closer to a normal car than most people think.

The most reported electric car problems
Across the 12 models above. A complaint can describe more than one problem.
Complaints are reports owners file with NHTSA, the federal vehicle-safety agency. NHTSA does not verify each one, and a year or model that sold more cars usually gets more complaints, so treat the counts as a map of what to check, not a reliability score. Data pulled from NHTSA's public complaint and recall databases in September 2026.
What a mobile mechanic can – and can't – do on an EV
Usually a mobile job
- 12-volt battery testing and replacement
- Brake pads, rotors and calipers (they wear slowly but can seize from lack of use)
- Suspension parts: control arms, links, shocks
- Tires and wheels, where the mechanic offers tire service
- Wipers, cabin air filters, lights and many sensors
Service center only
- High-voltage battery and orange cables
- Drive unit and inverter
- Charge port, onboard charger and charging faults
- Software, screens and driver-assist calibration
- Recall repairs (free at the brand's service center)
Tesla also runs its own mobile service vans for many repairs, booked through the Tesla app. For everything in the left column, an independent mobile mechanic is often faster and cheaper. Find a mobile mechanic in your city

Electric cars: questions
Can a mobile mechanic work on an electric car?
Yes, on the parts an EV shares with any car: the 12-volt battery, brakes, suspension, tires, wipers and filters. High-voltage, charging and software work goes to the brand's service center.
What is the most common electric car problem?
In NHTSA owner complaints for the 12 models here, the most reported symptom is brake problems. A dead 12-volt battery is a common reason an EV will not power on.
Why won't my electric car turn on?
A weak 12-volt battery is one of the most common causes – it powers the computers that switch the main battery on. A mobile mechanic can test it where the car sits.
Are EV recall repairs free?
Yes, safety recall repairs are done free by the brand's service centers. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
