Toyota RAV4 Overheating: What Owners Report
90 of the 5,978 owner complaints NHTSA has for 2008–2024 RAV4 models describe overheating. Here is which years and systems show up most, what owners say, what to check first, and when a mobile mechanic can fix it where the car sits.
NHTSA data pulled September 2026.
Pull over when it is safe, turn the engine off and let it cool. Never open the radiator or coolant cap on a hot engine – the coolant is under pressure and can burn you.
Which RAV4 years report it most
Reports peak with the 2019 model year (45). A year with more cars on the road usually has more reports, so use this to know what to ask, not to rank years.
What else these reports mention
Owners filing these complaints most often also named the engine and electrical system – usually where a mechanic starts looking.
| System named | Reports | Mobile mechanic? |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 68 | Diagnose first |
| Electrical system | 17 | Often in the driveway |
| Transmission and drivetrain | 5 | Usually a shop |
| Fuel system | 4 | Diagnose first |
| Throttle and cruise control | 3 | Diagnose first |
| Brakes | 3 | Usually on the spot |
What RAV4 owners describe
“Water pump bearing overheating – odor clearly discernible from inside vehicle.”
“2, 2011 – the engine revved so strongly the front end shook violently and we could smell the engine overheating.”
“The engine temperature was rising (according to the temperature gauge), and then the gauges stopped functioning.”
“I was told that perhaps the probmem is that the area around tbe bulbs is too small causing them to over heat, which could be dangerous”
Related Toyota RAV4 recalls
3 of the 45 recalls for these years mention a related system or symptom. Check your VIN – if one is open, the fix is free at a dealer.
| Reported | Campaign | Model years | System | What can happen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020-02 | 20V064000 | 2019–2020 | Engine and cooling | A coolant leak can cause the engine to overheat and cause a vehicle stall in conventional gasoline vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 2015-10 | 15V689000 | 2008–2011 | Wipers, windows and mirrors | If the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, debris and moisture that get into the switch may cause a short circuit and the switch assembly may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire. |
| 2012-10 | 12V491000 | 2008–2009 | Wipers, windows and mirrors | If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire. |
Safety recall repairs are done free by the brand's dealers. A mobile mechanic cannot do recall work. Enter your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see open recalls on your exact car. "Park it" means NHTSA and the maker say not to drive the vehicle until it is fixed.
What to check first
- Once the engine is cold, check the coolant level in the overflow tank.
- Look under the car for green, orange or pink puddles – a coolant leak.
- Check whether the radiator fan runs when the engine is warm and the A/C is on.
- Watch for white smoke from the exhaust or a sweet smell, which can mean a head gasket problem.

Can a mobile mechanic fix it?
Often. Thermostats, hoses, radiators, fans, water pumps on many engines and coolant leaks are common mobile jobs. A blown head gasket or a cracked engine block needs a shop.

| Thermostat | $616–716 | Quoted after a look | Too few published mobile prices to show a range |
| Water pump | $891–1,135 | Quoted after a look | Too few published mobile prices to show a range |
| Radiator | $1,368–1,550 | Quoted after a look | Too few published mobile prices to show a range |
