Honda Odyssey Overheating: What Owners Report
57 of the 5,369 owner complaints NHTSA has for 2008–2024 Odyssey models describe overheating. Here is which years and systems show up most, what owners say, what to check first, and when a mobile mechanic can fix it where the car sits.
NHTSA data pulled September 2026.
Pull over when it is safe, turn the engine off and let it cool. Never open the radiator or coolant cap on a hot engine – the coolant is under pressure and can burn you.
Which Odyssey years report it most
Reports peak with the 2019 model year (18). A year with more cars on the road usually has more reports, so use this to know what to ask, not to rank years.
What else these reports mention
Owners filing these complaints most often also named the driver-assist systems and electrical system – usually where a mechanic starts looking.
| System named | Reports | Mobile mechanic? |
|---|---|---|
| Driver-assist systems | 38 | Dealer or recall |
| Electrical system | 18 | Often in the driveway |
| Engine | 10 | Diagnose first |
| Brakes | 8 | Usually on the spot |
| Fuel system | 7 | Diagnose first |
| Transmission and drivetrain | 6 | Usually a shop |
What Odyssey owners describe
“Driving vehicle and alternator over heated and caught on fire while we were in the vehicle”
“When she instinctively looked at the temperature gauge on the dashboard, it was normal (about halfway up) due to this symptom, she was forced to park the car to the side of the highway.”
“If traveling at a high speed and this nut came loose the lite would come on, but if valve came totally loose and tire overheated and blew out wouldn't this be a safety concern?”
“Dear NHTSA advisor, thank you for regarding my request for warranty coverage for the critical misfire and overheating defect with my 2012 Odyssey Honda engine 3.5l engine.”

Safety recall repairs are done free by the brand's dealers. A mobile mechanic cannot do recall work. Enter your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see open recalls on your exact car. "Park it" means NHTSA and the maker say not to drive the vehicle until it is fixed.
What to check first
- Once the engine is cold, check the coolant level in the overflow tank.
- Look under the car for green, orange or pink puddles – a coolant leak.
- Check whether the radiator fan runs when the engine is warm and the A/C is on.
- Watch for white smoke from the exhaust or a sweet smell, which can mean a head gasket problem.

Can a mobile mechanic fix it?
Often. Thermostats, hoses, radiators, fans, water pumps on many engines and coolant leaks are common mobile jobs. A blown head gasket or a cracked engine block needs a shop.
