Stop driving if the gauge is in the red

Pull over when it is safe, turn the engine off and let it cool. Never open the radiator or coolant cap on a hot engine – the coolant is under pressure and can burn you.

Recall repairs are free – at a dealer

Safety recall repairs are done free by the brand's dealers. A mobile mechanic cannot do recall work. Enter your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see open recalls on your exact car. "Park it" means NHTSA and the maker say not to drive the vehicle until it is fixed.

Before you call

What to check first

  1. Once the engine is cold, check the coolant level in the overflow tank.
  2. Look under the car for green, orange or pink puddles – a coolant leak.
  3. Check whether the radiator fan runs when the engine is warm and the A/C is on.
  4. Watch for white smoke from the exhaust or a sweet smell, which can mean a head gasket problem.
