If the light is flashing

A flashing check engine light usually means a severe misfire that can overheat the catalytic converter. Slow down, avoid hard acceleration and get it checked as soon as you can.

Recall repairs are free – at a dealer

Safety recall repairs are done free by the brand's dealers. A mobile mechanic cannot do recall work. Enter your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see open recalls on your exact car. "Park it" means NHTSA and the maker say not to drive the vehicle until it is fixed.

Before you call

What to check first

  1. Note whether the light is solid or flashing, and whether the car drives differently.
  2. Check that the fuel cap is tight – a loose cap can set an evaporative-system code on many cars.
  3. Look at the other gauges: temperature, oil pressure and battery warnings change how urgent it is.
  4. Have the code read – a mobile mechanic reads it with an OBD-II scanner and checks the cause, not just the code.

Mobile repair

Can a mobile mechanic fix it?

Yes for the diagnosis, and often for the repair. Reading codes, checking live data and fixing sensors, ignition coils, spark plugs and vacuum leaks are normal mobile jobs. Internal engine or transmission faults need a shop.

European car? Ask one question first

Many European models need brand-specific scan tools and parts. Before booking, ask the mechanic whether they work on your make and have the right diagnostic tool – many mobile mechanics do, and they will say so.
