Cadillac CTS Check Engine Light: What Owners Report
54 of the 862 owner complaints NHTSA has for 2008–2024 CTS models describe a check engine or warning light. Here is which years and systems show up most, what owners say, what to check first, and when a mobile mechanic can fix it where the car sits.
NHTSA data pulled September 2026.
A flashing check engine light usually means a severe misfire that can overheat the catalytic converter. Slow down, avoid hard acceleration and get it checked as soon as you can.
Which CTS years report it most
Reports peak with the 2009 model year (29). A year with more cars on the road usually has more reports, so use this to know what to ask, not to rank years.
What else these reports mention
Owners filing these complaints most often also named the engine and transmission and drivetrain – usually where a mechanic starts looking.
| System named | Reports | Mobile mechanic? |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 30 | Diagnose first |
| Transmission and drivetrain | 9 | Usually a shop |
| Fuel system | 7 | Diagnose first |
| Electrical system | 5 | Often in the driveway |
| Brakes | 5 | Usually on the spot |
| Engine and cooling | 5 | Diagnose first |
What CTS owners describe
“The check engine light eventually comes on indicating misfires in 2 cylinders”
“They could not duplicate issue on 5/24 engine light comes on.”

Safety recall repairs are done free by the brand's dealers. A mobile mechanic cannot do recall work. Enter your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see open recalls on your exact car. "Park it" means NHTSA and the maker say not to drive the vehicle until it is fixed.
What to check first
- Note whether the light is solid or flashing, and whether the car drives differently.
- Check that the fuel cap is tight – a loose cap can set an evaporative-system code on many cars.
- Look at the other gauges: temperature, oil pressure and battery warnings change how urgent it is.
- Have the code read – a mobile mechanic reads it with an OBD-II scanner and checks the cause, not just the code.

Can a mobile mechanic fix it?
Yes for the diagnosis, and often for the repair. Reading codes, checking live data and fixing sensors, ignition coils, spark plugs and vacuum leaks are normal mobile jobs. Internal engine or transmission faults need a shop.
